This perspective shows a small conference room and part of an office. It helps to display a lowered ceiling in this area. To begin with, I had gridded acoustical tile in these areas but later changed it to spaced beams to give a lowered feel but still keeps the space open above.

This perspective displays my idea of an exploded glass box conference room. This gives the employees a specific area to meet but it also stays open to give the sense of flowing through it.

This perspective displays another area in which the ceiling is lowered which helps in the transition. This also shows a curved wall which is shown throughout my plan.

Retro Modern

Very bright and contrasting colors. Also has a great deal of outline.

Pop Art

This displays very bright colors and heavy outlines. It shows the pop culture of the time. The flat black background makes the colored images "pop".

Bauhaus

This design is from Bauhaus. This design shows a great deal of shapes and shadows.

I think this advertisment is very plain and clear. It really has a simple design and visually tells you what its for. Due to the position of the picture (being in the center) automatically draws ones eyes and attention directly to it. Once the eye is drawn to the Picture it leads to the text which explains the picture.

This advertisment is very informative and really has a neat way of showing what products they have. They could have just showed pictures of the product and that was it but they chose to have them in the places you would your own home. This to me is very eye catching and has such a great composition.

I really enjoy this advertisment because the way they chose to show it was good. I like how they made it look like it was painted. This to me gives a better visual element. It really makes me feel like I could go anywhere in this thing. The colors used also gives this very cold feeling like your really up north in the mountains. This is my favorite.

This is my interpretation of a welcome mat for the country Jordan. The reason I chose to use the shape and materials I used was because they had a significant connection to the country. The shape in the middle was taken from Jordanian architecture. This also encourages the visitor to walk "through" it and opens up to visitor. The sand in the middle is representation of the landscape. Jordan is 75% desert. Coffee is a very important product in Jordan. It is a symbol of hospitality and it is common to be offered coffee or tea, or to be invited to have coffee with someone in his or her home. The coffee beans represent this symbol of hospitality. In my notes I have that I would be using straw but I decided to change that to moss. This is representation of the landscape as well because of the arid climate. I chose these things hoping it would help one to feel more at home and to make one feel like this was home.

My emotion was Mischievous. This was a hard emotion to display. I feel raccoons are very mischievous and so I showed one raccoon stealing money and the other with a ball and chain for his actions.

IAR 202_Culture_Interview with Daniel

Micah and I interviewed Daniel, who is an architectural student from Peru. Daniel works in the same architectural firm that I work for. He is in Greensboro for summer break (it is winter here, but summer in Peru). Daniel is 25 and is single. His father and mother live in two separate cities in Peru. He has 2 brothers from his mother's side, and 7 brothers from his father. He lives in the third largest city in Peru called Trujillo, a city located between the coast and the Andes Mountains. His native language is Spanish.

Daniel has lived on his own for 6 years. He has struggled through is studies as an architectural student. He described the culture in Peru as being very corrupt, but Daniel holds to Christian beliefs. Although he loves his country, Daniel's goal is to live and work in America when he graduates from school in a year. This will give him an opportunity to provide for his brothers and family back home. Because of his Christian beliefs, Daniel has struggled mostly in Peru with his integrity. While Daniel is here in the U.S., his challenge is learning to trust people. He described the people in Peru as being two-faced. He doesn't want that for himself. He is pursuing integrity, which is one of his main goals.

Daniel has also struggled financially. Since he has pursued integrity, it has been hard to earn money in Peru. Hard work in Peru doesn't go very far. For the first years of living on his own, Daniel started to earn and save his money. Then several accidents caused him to lose almost everything he had. Through perserverance, Daniel has been able to earn some of the money back to pay for his school and living expenses. He met Bill, the owner of our architectural firm, while Bill was on a missions trip for his church. Daniel described his goal of being an architect and his struggles with money and Bill decided to offer him a job in Greensboro. He has struggled to gain Visa's to get into the U.S. because of illegal immigration. Daniel has worked in the U.S.A for 3 summers now. While in the U.S. it has been easier for him to live as a Christian and to pursue his integrity. He is saving to pay for the remainder of his school, and then will pursue architecture as a career in America.

Micah and I asked him to describe himself in one word. The word Daniel came up with (the best he could in English) was perseverance. He has had setbacks his whole life, but has honestly worked hard for everything he has.

Daniel has really inspired me as a person because seeing and hearing what he has gone through and to still have such a great outlook on things is amazing. He is a great guy and I am fortunate to have met him.

I really enjoyed this assignment because I learned new Photoshop techniques all while manipulating a photograh of a piece of architecture. This assignment was very effective because I was forced to experiment with new tools and create something unlike any other.

Today technology is better than ever and this is crucial for a designer. If a designer knows how use a computer for design then he or she is ahead of the game. By using a computer to aid them in design means they can draw floor plans, sections, details of various things, 3-d renderings, perspectives, and many other things. Also using the computer to help aid in design means math may not be such a problem anymore. If you use AutoCAD for example, it helps out a great deal with the math and does so much of it for you. I think this is leading a future of programs and computers that would already have all the information downloading into it like building code and so on so that when drafting out a floor plan for example, it would account for a codes and meet them. It has come a long ways however. Maybe in the future these 3-d programs will be simpler to use. You may not be able to tell the difference between a jpeg and a 3-d rendered drawing. This would help the client visualize an actual structure or so they think rather than a cartoon looking box like some programs still look like today. Judging from the last 50 years we have greatly improved and advanced when it comes to technology and the idea of computing in design and I feel its only going to keep advancing and helping us and making things easier on us.

The pieces of the exhibit are actually brought together to form this exhibit space. Also, contrasting materials creates a great characteristic throughout the exhibit.

Digital media creates a sense of interaction throughout the exhibit. This gives a great break from the flat, 2-D images. One feels more apart of the exhibit rather than just a spectator.

This sloped wall and ceiling echo Loewenstein’s residential work. This shows one aspect of how Loewenstein was brought to this exhibit.

Together with Loewenstein

The exhibit “Close to Home” featuring Edward Loewenstein, was an experience shaped by the idea of bringing together. This also happens to be my interpretation of the concept for this exhibit.
At first observation, it caught my eye through the glass of the gallery. As I enter the space, I was a bit overwhelmed by the actual size of the exhibit but once I was in there, I got a better sense of scale. The exhibit was very well lit due to the strategically placed track lighting. I had no problem seeing exhibit here unlike some which are so dimly lit that it makes it very hard to see the exhibit. As for the layout of the exhibit itself, I really like the idea of the diagonal wall piercing through the glass wall “reaching out” beyond the gallery. This alone adds great deal of character to the exhibit. Loewenstein’s residential work was greatly taken into consideration when designing this exhibit because the exhibit expresses the same openness allowing one to bring together spaces. There was also a mimic of a feature Loewenstein had on one of his houses. It was the wall sloping inward as well as the roof sloping up. He also used a rich palette of materials, which was also done here with the two very contrasting materials featured in the exhibit, metal and wood. I really enjoyed seeing that materials used are reusable and the finishes used are low impact. Another reason is because his layouts were often very open and had a sense of fluidity to them such as this one does as one moves through the space. The layout of the exhibit pushes you through the space from one end to the other. I believe this is done so one has to experience the entire exhibit as they move through.
As I analyzed the exhibit and really thought about a connection, it occurred to me that my concept was very active in this space because the material did in fact manifest the concept of bringing together. The whole idea of the exhibit is to bring Loewenstein and his work together with us, thus bringing the idea of modernism close to home. Also, the physical exhibit itself has the concept of bringing together. The materials were designed to literally come together to create a way to display exhibit. These “display units” were acting as exhibits themselves.
I also analyzed the different types of media and how he displayed. I think the computers were a great way to break up the way to display the exhibit. This helps one to interact with the exhibit in a way that one would feel they really received something out of it. I think that really helps give a positive experience. I also really enjoyed the way the 3-D renderings were handled. I got more out of the projected walk through of the plan more than I would have if certain scenes where printed. I think that was a very ingenious way to display that type of media.
This exhibit was a great reference to Edward Loewenstein and his work. It brought together the idea of modernism in Greensboro and Loewenstein. I feel the concept of bringing together fits this exhibit in every way possible.

Intent Narrative

My intention for this suite was to really utilize the space for as much functionality as possible. I tried to stay with the same style as the rest of the building with very geometric shapes as well as strong horizontal and vertical lines. These bedrooms will not only be a space for sleeping but also a place to store belongings, study, reside from others in the building, and just a place to relax. I also intended this place to be soothing and have a relaxed atmosphere.

My Sister's House

In my group luscious, we came up with two primary design styles for My Sister’s house. We used styles from Isami Noguchi and Mies Van Der Rohe. We looked at how we could fuse the two styles without taking away from either style.
We started out with the idea of connections. We felt that connections were a huge part of a building. We focused on connections from how one room connects to another to how the women connect to the building.
We are joining the biomorphic shapes of Noguchi with the very straight, hard lines of Mies. We feel that by joining the two together, we can create a very unique building a great sense of connection.
